Acer Corporation was established in 1976 by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and five others as Multitech in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The company started with a team of eleven employees and $25,000. Initially, it was mostly a distributor of electronic parts and a consultant for microprocessor technologies. It later produced the Micro-Professor MPF-I training kit, two Apple II clones called the Microprofessor II and III, and various IBM PC compatible devices before becoming a significant PC manufacturer. The company was renamed Acer in 1987.
