On Catherine Street in Manhattan, New York, Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor opened their establishment in 1826. Initially, the company sold women's hosiery, cashmere shawls, and apparel. The store relocated numerous times throughout the years, first to Broadway at Grand in 1861, then to a cast iron structure at Broadway and 20th Street in the 1960s. The company relocated to 5th Avenue in 1914, becoming the first store to open on what would become the infamous 5th Avenue. In 1945, the company made history by appointing Dorothy Shaver as the first female to lead a retail establishment. Lord & Taylor now has more than 50 stores across the United States.
