Target Corporation, an American big box department store company, is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a part of the S&P 500 Index and the eighth-largest retailer in the US. Target was created in 1962 by Minneapolis' Dayton's department company as its bargain arm. Target Corporation, a division of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation, started expanding its Target stores nationwide in the 1980s. In the 1990s, it introduced new store formats under the Target brand. As a participant in the market, the company has found success as a cheap-chic brand. In 2000, the parent business changed its name to Target Corporation, and in 2004, it sold off its final department.
